Identifying patient variables predictive of recovery in different brain injury populations would generate improved prognostic information and help rehabilitation teams set appropriate therapeutic goals. This cohort study of 447 NHS neurorehabilitation inpatients aimed to identify functional and cognitive predictors of recovery following severe acquired brain injury caused by trauma, stroke and anoxia. Motor and cognitive impairment ratings were collected at admission and discharge using the Functional Independence Measure and Functional Assessment Measure (FIM+FAM), and injury-related and demographic data were collated from medical records. Predictors of physical, cognitive and overall recovery were identified via hierarchical regression analyses. Several key findings emerged. Firstly, on-admission motor skills predicted functional and overall outcomes across groups. Secondly, on-admission social interaction skills predicted cognitive discharge outcomes in stroke and trauma, and overall outcomes for stroke, but did not predict anoxia outcomes. Thirdly, age predicted all forms of recovery for stroke only. Further group-specific factors were also identified as predicting motor and cognitive recovery, indicating that factors key to the rehabilitation trajectory may differ between populations. These variables should be considered in rehabilitation goal planning, although further research is required to explore their contributions to recovery.Technology developments and demand for flexibility in health care and in contact with the health care system are two factors leading to increased use of eHealth solutions. The use of eHealth has been shown to have positive effects in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, but the full potential for this group needs to be explored. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the feasibility of an eHealth tool used for exercise training and online contacts for people with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The 10-week intervention included an eHealth tool for exercise training in home environment and regular online contacts, as well as weekly e-rounds for health care professionals. Seven of the nine participants completed the study. The eHealth tool was found to be feasible for e-rounds, exercise training and online contacts. Participants could manage the tool and adhere to training; positive effects were shown, and no adverse events occurred. Welfare spending is one national policy that may influence population health. While some research indicates higher levels of welfare investment may positively influence health, mixed findings contradict this conclusion. These mixed results examining the link between welfare policies and health may be better understood by investigating the relationship between welfare spending and preventative health interventions, such as immunization. Objective This article's purpose is to summarize the literature studying the relationship between national welfare spending and immunization outcomes. Design This scoping review used the Joanna Briggs scoping review method. Data sources The scoping review utilized scholarly databases and a focused gray literature search to find research articles that explored relationships between welfare spending and immunization outcomes. Review methods Data was extracted from articles, including themes, aims, populations, years of study, methods, and findings. The articles' themes were further analyzed with a word cloud and principal component analysis to determine which themes were more likely to coincide in the literature. Results Seven articles were included in the review. Most of these articles did not address the relationship between welfare spending or policy and immunizations directly or with rigorous methods. Conclusions Ultimately, the results of the scoping review suggest a lack of literature regarding the relationship between welfare spending and immunization outcomes. Further research is needed to understand the impacts of national welfare spending on immunization outcomes.
